Why per 100 g, and why that matters

Nutrition databases work in grams because it is the only way to compare two foods honestly. A "serving" of almonds and a "serving" of watermelon are not the same thing, and packaging serving sizes are chosen by marketers. Every page here leads with per-100 g figures and then converts to the USDA's own household measures — a cup, a slice, a medium one — so you get both the comparable number and the useful one.

All values come from USDA FoodData Central, specifically the SR Legacy release, which is a work of the United States government and therefore in the public domain. Nothing here is estimated, crowdsourced or scraped from another site.
